IURC to Hold Hearings on New Southern Indiana Area Code

The new telephone area code for southern Indiana will get its first public hearing on Monday.
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is planning to hold the first of 10 public hearings to get public input on how to implement a new area code in southern Indiana.
The 812 Area Code is running low on available numbers and a new area code must be put in place.   The IURC must decide whether to divide the 812 area code into two geographic areas or to create an overlay inside the 812 area code where new phones would get the new area code.   An overlay would leave the 812 area intact but all new phone numbers in the area would be assigned a different area code.
The IURC says, that since 2005, the overlay method has been the most commonly used option.  However, before that the geographic split method was the most commonly used method.
Ten hearing are scheduled throughout southern Indiana.  The IURC is expected to make a final decision by the end of the year.
